Race Retro 'turns out nice again'
George Formby's 'No Limit' was made in 1935 and features the Lancastrian comedian playing the hapless George Shuttleworth, a Wigan chimney sweep who dreams of competing in the Isle of Man TT with the top team, Rainbow. He builds his own motorcycle, only for its brakes to fail, but his all-conquering practice time gives him his dream ride with the Rainbow team.
The film, directed by Monty Banks, was Formby's third and remains a favourite with classic motorcycle lovers because of the footage taken at that year's TT, and also features Formby strumming his ukulele and performing the song 'Riding in the TT Races.'
But as with all Formby films trouble's always lurking around the corner: During the race George comes up against some pretty stiff opposition from disgruntled riders, all looking to dislodge him from his Rainbow mount and prevent him coming home first, which of course he does.
Now Race Retro visitors can see a replica of George's home-built bike, which in the film was dubbed the Shuttleworth Snap. A replica of the Rainbow bike (which was really an Ariel) will also be displayed, along with 'Snap' owner Graeme Hardy who is donning period racing leathers to complete the period race image.
So forget 'The Wild Bunch' and 'Easy Rider' – here's a slice of British period two-wheeled action – and a fine tribute to a British icon.
And talking of the TT, Senior TT 2009 winner Steve Plater will also be making an appearance. Steve also won the 2009 British Supersport Championship with a 36 point advantage over his nearest rival.
